SUMMER WORK
REGARDING BOOKS:
Please complete your summer work in the following steps:
Step 1:
Familiarize (or re-familiarize) yourself with The Trojan War, as it’s the big event that happened before Homer’s Odyssey, which he wrote about in a book called Iliad. It’s good to have a quick recap! On this site, please read the brief synopsis. If you’d like, there’s also a video at the top (click the play symbol on the Trojan horse graphic).
Step 2:
Before you begin reading, Watch Mrs. Rohlfs's Odyssey notes presentation video (you must be logged in to your charlottenet.org account to access the video). There are important details in this video that can help guide your reading, so make sure you do this first!
Step 3:
Read & Keep a Metacognitive log of Odyssey. (The log is a view-only googledoc. Please make a copy and share it with Mrs. Rohlfs)
Step 4:
Select at least one choice novel that you haven’t read from the College Board’s list "101 Books Recommended for College.” Please avoid highlighted titles, as we will read those in class, or you’ve read them in previous courses. As you read, periodically fill out a Metacognitive log. (The log is a view-only googledoc. Please make a copy and share it with Mrs. Rohlfs) Again, you can access any free online version of these texts, borrow them, check them out from the library, or if you prefer, purchase.
→ When we start class, be ready to be an authority on Odyssey!
→ Also, be prepared to show Mrs. Rohlfs your metacognitive reading log for both Odyssey and your choice novel.

- All summer work is to be conducted online, but you may absolutely borrow or purchase a copy of Odyssey if you prefer to read a hard copy.
- Here is a link to the free complete online text of Homer’s Odyssey.
- If you plan to get a hard copy of Odyssey: We typically read the prose version, so if you buy the book, I recommend a prose version. Here is the version we have used in class. It’s only $2, but there is an additional shipping fee of $2.80 at checkout, FYI. If you like a challenge, you are absolutely welcome to read the verse version of this classic! Any edition at a bookstore or from Amazon is fine!
- The choice reading title that you select is up to you--you can borrow it, find it online, check out a title out from the public library, or buy a copy.
